Video Poker Terms

By: Stanley Majors

Even though Video Poker is a fairly simple game to play, there are some terms you need to know in order to get the most enjoyment from your playing experience.

Wild Card: A card that can be treated as having any denomination for the purpose of making a poker hand in video poker. For example if you are dealt a wildcard, 10 of Hearts, Jack of Hearts, Queen of Hearts and King of Hearts, the wildcard would be the Ace of Hearts (the wildcard will always make the highest possible hand from the other cards in the player’s hand).

Double-up Option: When you have a high enough video poker hand (this is dependent on the type of online video poker you are playing), you have the option of trying to double your winnings. You do this by playing a mini game with the “dealer”. The mini game consists of 5 cards being dealt face down. The “dealer” then chooses a card to be flipped over. Then the player chooses a card which has to beat the “dealer’s” card in order to double your winnings. If you do not beat the “dealer’s” card you lose all your winnings. If you win the double-up you have the option of doubling up again or collecting your winnings and leaving the mini game.

Face Cards: Refers to the cards Jack, Queen or King.

Deuces: Are the cards with a face value of 2.

Double card: If drawn in a video poker game that uses this card, and the rest of the hand is a winning combination, the payout is doubled. The winning combinations that can be obtained with a double card are: Pair, 2 Pair, 3 of a kind and 4 of a kind.
